This photo was taken in Pompei at the edge of the Necropolis (cemetary), outside the city gates. These plaster casts are the only thing that remains of the thousands inhabitants who did not escape the volcanic ash and hot gases. Days after our visit workmen unearthed an old Roman storehouse with the remains of up to fifty people.
