Lightweight 1980's Road Bicycles
Raleigh Carlton 1984

Small framed bike with Raleigh Ti tubing and Reynolds aluminum rims (Maillard high flange hubs). Brakes (Weinnmann), crank arms (possibly Stronglight) and deuralliers (Suntour) are labelled with the Raleigh name. This Carlton/Raleigh was made in Nottingham in 1984 and bears little resemblance to the original Carltons and their high quality. Lugs and brazing are quite rough. Used this bike as a beater for my commute (42 km) and found it to be quite nice to ride with a nice range og gears.

Sold in 2008

Falcon 198?

Not quite certain when this bike was made but it is built quite well and rides lke a rocket:

• Reynolds 531 tubing, forged Reynolds 531 forks with Cinelli lugs. Cableing through the top tube

• Campy Chorus crank and Athena seat post

• DuraAce head set with cinelli bars

• Shimano 600 brake set and rear deurallier

• Mavic braze on front deurallier

• Wolber 700 rims (shimano hubs)

Have not been able to find any information on the 1980's Falcons but this one was probably sold out of a now long gone bicycle shop in St. Catharines, Ontario. Any one have information or similar bike -

Dawes Galaxy 1975

I picked up this bike in 2006 . The previous owner had purchased the frame and had his local LBS build up the bike for him. Front and rear deuralliers - Suntour, brakes Weinmann, crank Nevar (steel and heavy). Frame made of Reynolds 531, original rims were heavy steel Weinmann- 27". Relaced with aluminum Ayara rims, Shimano hubs.

This is a nice bike to ride with a relaxed geomety for light touring. Unfortunately the bike suffered a cracked BB and has now been retired to the wall in my bike work room. I'm looking for a Dawes Galaxy/Super Galaxy frame or complete bike. If you have one for sale or trade - contact me....

Bianchi Sport 2000

This is a Japanese made frame of Tange 90 double butted tubing and Manaloy 2001 forks. Bike has a nice sport touring geometry and has been used for good weather commuting till I found the Fuji Touring Series III. Components are Shimano 600. Rims are 27" Araya aluminum with Shimano hubs. Converted this bike to a triple crank and deuralier off a mountain bike all seems to work well after minor adjustments.

Miyata 310

My cousin an avid cyclist gave this bike to me as he upgraded to a new carbon fibre road rocket. The bike is all original with Miyata's own Cro-Mo tubing (double butted) and Cro-Mo forks. Components are all Shimano 105, with Araya 27" rims, Shimano hubs. Gearing is more sport touring. Miyata build quality is fantastic as I have read and found out on websites. This bike is in fantastic condition and looks as it came off the shop floor. Quality of the build is very good as the ride.

1983 Touring Series III

The photo at the left is my daily commuter, that I have used daily from early summer till this new year 2009. The frame and forks are made of Fuji's own VALite alloy. Front and rear deuralliers are original Suntour Mountech, with Suntour downtube shifters. DiaCompe brake set with Sugino tripple crank. Rims are the original Araya 27" 36 spoke , hubs - SanSIn sealed hub bearings. A Vetta rear rack was on the bike when purchased and from a little web browsing seems as if the Vetta was a purchased option. The natural gum brake hoods that came with the bike were DiaCompe and unfortunately had turned into a sticky mass. From my stock of spare parts I managed to find a pair of brake hoods that were pretty close to original. The original pedals were repalced with Atom 600s, Ale toe clips. Planet bike mudguards from MEC were added along with a front pannier rack. This bike is also used for grocery, beer and wine runs locally.

1983 Touring Series III Makeover

Photo right is the present incarnation of the Fugi. The steering stem has been changed along with the bars. The original SR's bars were very narrow and the DiaCompe brake levers were past their prime so I opted for aero bars and levers. It is nice to have extra space for your hands, lights and computer. Added was a Princeton battery powered LED light, from MEC in Toronto. I needed a strong light for the dark morning commute of 19 km as I am constantly on the watch for deer, and others critters. My next purchase will be a set of Suntour barcons to repace the downtube shifters and if the gods permit a larger set of panniers. The wheel set was switched to double walled Alex rims - 32 spokes (14 guage) and Shimano hubs. With the old rims I was constantly tightning spokes at least once every two weeks but with the new rims the ride feels smoother and so far the spokes have retained their tension. This bike will be used for my daily commute, errands and some touring this summer . New photos to follow
